Instituto TIM completes one year

In July, Instituto TIM completes one year in operation. Since it was established, more than 250 municipalities, 900 schools and 2,300 teachers have been involved in the initiatives and projects of the institute, which now operates in 25 Brazilian states. In 2013, 6,732 students participated in the activities, in a total of more than 100,000 people benefited; in 2014, there are more than 70,000 students involved already.

With a mission of creating and enhancing resources and strategies for the democratization of science, technology and innovation and an intense focus on the education of Brazilian children and youths, Instituto TIM acts guided by four principles and strategies: Education, Applications, Work and Inclusion. The projects and initiatives fall into these four areas: O Círculo da Matemática do Brasil, TIM Faz Ciência, support to federal program Ciência sem Fronteiras and the support line to science and technology museums and centers in Education; Mapas Culturais, Agentes da Transformação and Zeladoria Urbana Participativa in Applications; and TIM Tec at Work.

In addition to these, Instituto TIM supports non-governmental organizations and social and educational initiatives. As an example of these initiatives is Bateria do Instituto TIM, composed of youths from Rio de Janeiro aged between 9 and 18. Most participants are hearing impaired, but there are also youths who are visually impaired, autistic and cognitively disabled and others who do not have any special need. The NGOs supported are Ronald McDonald Institute, WWF Brasil, Abrinq Foundation, Red Cross, Ayrton Senna Institute, Amazonas Sustainable Foundation and Casa de Passagem of Recife-PE. Are also supported OBMEP (Brazilian Public School Mathematics Olympics), Pró-Engenharias/RH-TI program and CDI Mobilidade.
