In 2015, Instituto TIM will support the Brazilian Public School Math Olympics (OBMEP) through the Instituto TIM-OBMEP Scholarships. The initiative, which aims to give financial aid to talented young people to attend college, will benefit 50 students who will enter Higher Education in 2015 and another 50 in 2016. Each selected student will receive a monthly stipend of R$ 1,200.00 for 12 months, renewable annually up to a maximum of 48 months. Registration to participate in the selection process is open at OBMEP’s website, and should close 20 days after the end of registration for the 2015 SISU (Unified Selection System) – First Half.
Applicants for Instituto TIM-OBMEP Scholarships must have been awarded gold, silver or bronze medals in any edition of the OBMEP. They must have been accepted in public universities to take the following programs in 2015: Astronomy, Biology, Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics, Physics, Mathematics or Chemistry. In 2014, year when OBMEP celebrated a decade, 18 million students enrolled in the Olympics and 6,500 won a medal.
The scholars will be chosen by a committee composed of two representatives appointed by Instituto TIM, two teachers appointed by the coordination of OBMEP and a professor of the National Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA). The criteria for the selection of students will be academic merit, based on ENEM’s result, and the candidate’s performance at OBMEP. The committee will also assess the family per capita income and the importance that the financial support will have for each student.
