The partnership between Instituto TIM and the Brazilian Public School Math Olympics (OBMEP) will continue in 2015 with a new form of investment: scholarships for medal-winning students. The announcement was made by OBMEP’s general coordinator, Claudio Landim, at the public event “What if children liked Math,” held at the National Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA), in Rio de Janeiro-RJ, on September 12th.
The support from Instituto TIM will be directed to OBMEP medal-winning students who will join Higher Education from 2015. It’s expected that students who choose courses in Exact Sciences will be granted with the scholarships. They should be chosen based on the performance factors of the Unified Selection System (Sisu) and the location of the university where they will take Higher Education.
In 2014, Instituto TIM supported OBMEP through the production of video lessons for Portal da Matemática. The website brings together applications and video content covering the entire Math curriculum from the 6th grade of Elementary School to the 3rd year of High School.
The Brazilian Public School Math Olympics (OBMEP) has existed since 2005 and is held by IMPA with support from the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. In 2013, around 19 million students in almost all Brazilian municipalities (99.3%) participated in the competition.
