Winners of the Brazilian Public School Math Olympics (OBMEP) throughout Brazil can already subscribe to Instituto TIM-OBMEP Scholarships 2017. The registrations started on February 6th and will be open until February 22nd on OBMEP website. The scholarships will be granted to 50 medallists who are entering this year in graduation courses in public universities. Each one of the selected students will receive a monthly scholarship in the amount of R$ 1,200 for 12 months, renewable annually up to 48 months.
To subscribe, it is required the candidates to be medallists of any OBMEP edition and to be starting the first period of graduation in the areas of Astronomy, Biology, Computer Sciences, Engineering, Statistics, Physics, Mathematics, Medicine and Chemistry. An academic commission organized by the National Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA), with the support of Instituto TIM, will be responsible to select the candidates. Among the criteria used as a base for the selection are the academic merits and the socio-economic situation of the students.
Currently, 97 students from 17 states receive the scholarship. Lucas Vieira Amarilha, a Civil Engineering student in the University of the State of Mato Grosso (UNEMAT), was one of the medallists selected in 2016. He used to live with his family in Novo Progresso (PA), where there are no public universities, neither superior courses of Civil Engineering. “My family cannot afford to support me in another state. Instituto TIM-OBMEP Scholarship is what is allowing me to study”, he says. Lucas uses the scholarship to pay his rent in Sinop (MT) and afford expenses such as food and books for the course.
The results of Instituto TIM-OBMEP Scholarships 2017 will be published on March 16th.
