Students from all over Brazil participated in the National Awarding Ceremony of the Brazilian Public School Math Olympics (OBMEP), held on July 20th at the Municipal Theater of Rio de Janeiro-RJ. Instituto TIM, an OBMEP partner since 2014, attended the event and gave an extra incentive to the 501 gold medallists, with the drawing of 100 tablets at the end of the awarding ceremony.
The president of Instituto TIM, Manoel Horacio, was present at the ceremony, which was attended by authorities such as the Minister of Education, Renato Janine Ribeiro, and the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Aldo Rebelo. Over 18 million students participated in OBMEP last year. In addition to the gold medallists, 1,500 students were awarded with silver medals and 4,500 were awarded with bronze medals.
OBMEP was created in 2005 and is held by IMPA (National Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics) with support from the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. Instituto TIM supports OBMEP with the Instituto TIM-OBMEP Scholarships, aimed at the medal-winning students who joined Higher Education in public universities in 2015 in Engineering and Science programs.
During the ceremony, the general coordinator of the OBMEP and associate director of IMPA, Claudio Landim, recalled that the 2014 medallists will apply to the Instituto TIM-OBMEP Scholarships in 2016, the second year of the program. “The first selection was made this year, and a student wrote that she had been admitted to the University of Helsinki and would like to know if she could continue with the scholarship to carry on her studies. This shows the quality of the selection that was made,” Landim said. Learn more about the partnership between Instituto TIM and OBMEP here.
