By the third consecutive year, Instituto TIM took part of the National Awarding Ceremony of the Brazilian Public School Math Olympics (OBMEP). The event was carried out on November 14th at the Rio de Janeiro Municipal Theater, with participation of 501 gold medal winners of OBMEP 2016, teachers, families and authorities, such as the executive secretary of the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovation and Communications (MCTIC), Elton Zacarias, the chief executive of the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA), Marcelo Viana, and the associate director of IMPA, Cláudio Landim.
The president of Instituto TIM, Manoel Horacio, and TIM’s director of Institutional Relations, Leandro Guerra, have also attended the ceremony. Manoel Horacio was invited to take the stage along with the mathematician Artur Ávila, first Latin-American to receive a Fields Medal (considered the Nobel of Mathematics), to deliver the medals to the delegation of São Paulo.
During the event, Cláudio Landim announced the availability of 50 more Instituto TIM-OBMEP Scholarships in 2018. Currently, 144 OBMEP medallists are benefited from the scholarship, which has a monthly amount of R$ 1,200. The public notice and the application opening might take place in the first quarter of 2018. In addition, Instituto TIM has given tablets to 13 multi-medallists (who have already received more than 5 OBMEP medals) and drew 37 more to the other medallists in the event.
Five IT-OBMEP scholars took part of the ceremony and received gold medals: Alan Gualberto de Pinho, Medicine student at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA); Jomar Ferreira Ramos Junior, Civil Engineering student at the Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES); Ricardo Vidal Teixeira, Civil Engineering student at the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF); and brothers Gabriel and Matheus Leite Queiroz Nunes, Statistics students at the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE).
In 2016, 17.8 million public school students from the 6th grade of Elementary School to the 3rd grade of High School of 99.6% of Brazilian cities took part of the 12nd edition of OBMEP. In addition to the 501 gold medallists, there were 1,500 silver medallists and 4,500 bronze medallists. 42,482 students received honorable mentions.
