Since October 2013, over 10,000 people, including students, teachers and family members, have participated in the activities supported by Instituto TIM at the Museum of Astronomy and Related Science (MAST), in Rio de Janeiro. Three initiatives were proposed by the museum with the aim of expanding access by the general public to scientific knowledge.
Between November 19th and December 15th, over 2,500 students from public schools in Rio de Janeiro were exposed to a mobile planetarium for the first time. With the O Planetário vai à Escola (Planetarium goes to School) project, students observed the stars and constellations, the planets’ orbits and other phenomena. The O Museu vai à Feira (Museum goes to the Market) project was set up at São Cristóvão Street Market, between November 29th and December 1st. Visitors to the market were able to visit the museum with free transportation, and museum-goers also visited the market. 2,500 people took part in the activity.
Another initiative is known as the Visita Estimulada ao Museu (Stimulated Visit to the Museum), which began in the National Week of Science and Technology, from October 21st to 27th, and will continue in 2014. During this event, groups of students and their families visited the museum accompanied by a guide. Visitors received snacks and free transportation to and from the venue.
