In 2014, O Círculo da Matemática do Brasil, an Instituto TIM project that brings to Brazil the approach to teaching Math that was developed by the North American teachers Bob and Ellen Kaplan, will take place in more cities. Furthermore, this year the initiative will include the training of teachers from the public schools that take part in the Project.
In addition to Porto Alegre, São Paulo, Fortaleza, Belém, Brasília, Salvador and Aracaju, the project will be extended to Rio de Janeiro-RJ, Duque de Caxias-RJ and Porto Velho-RO. Registration for teachers who wish to take part in O Círculo da Matemática do Brasil will run until March 31st. This year, the Kaplans will come to Brazil twice to lead training workshops in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Among the other actions included in the Project is the concession of three scholarships for teachers who will participate in the Math Circle Teacher Training Summer Institute, which takes place in the USA. In addition, educators who write academic articles about O Círculo da Matemática do Brasil approach will receive support to present their papers at national or international conferences.
In 2013, 50 educators from all over Brazil took part in the project. So far, over 6,000 students from the 2nd to 3rd years of Primary School have already participated in O Círculo da Matemática do Brasil activities in 61 schools.
